Post-House: All D1 Is Now Equivalency

As of July 1, 2025, all D1 sports moved to equivalency scholarships. There are no more "full ride only" headcount sports at D1.

What Equivalency Means

A coach with 12 equivalencies can give 12 athletes 100%, or 24 athletes 50%, or any combination. More athletes get some money — fewer get full rides.

How to Compare Offers

Athletic + academic + FAFSA + revenue share + NIL collective = total annual value. A 30% D1 scholarship at $65K/year may deliver less than a full academic package at a $38K D3.

What You Can Negotiate

More than most families realize. If you have competing offers: "We have an offer from [School] at this level — is there flexibility?" Never accept the first number as final.

The Scholarship Negotiation Conversation

Most families accept the first offer. Most coaches have room to move. Here is exactly how to handle the negotiation conversation without damaging the relationship:

What to actually say

"Coach [Name], we are very interested in [School] and [Athlete Name] has a real connection with your program. We have another offer from [School B] at [X]% that we are seriously considering. Is there any flexibility in [School A]'s package? We want to make the right decision for the right reasons and we'd love for [School] to be in that conversation."

Then stop talking. Let them respond. Do not fill the silence.

✓Always be honest about competing offers. Coaches talk to each other. If you fabricate an offer and it gets back to them, the real offer disappears too.
✓Ask about academic stacking. Even if athletic aid is fixed, ask: "Is there an academic scholarship available that could stack on top of the athletic package?" This is a separate budget line at most schools.
✓Ask once, cleanly. One direct ask is professional. Three rounds of negotiation over two weeks signals a family that will be difficult to work with and some coaches walk away.
✗Never negotiate by email. This is a phone conversation. Email creates a paper trail that can become uncomfortable and does not allow for the relational nuance that moves a coach to act.

Understanding Scholarship Renewal Risk

Athletic scholarships are one-year agreements that renew annually. Schools are required by NCAA rules to honor them as long as the athlete is academically eligible and meets conduct standards — but there is real renewal risk families do not plan for:

⚠Coaching change. A new coaching staff is not required to honor the previous staff's roster commitments beyond the current year in most cases. Ask every school: "If the head coach leaves, what is your program's policy on scholarship continuity?"
⚠Roster management. With roster limits replacing scholarship caps under the House settlement, programs are actively managing headcount. Athletes who are not contributing to the competitive roster are more vulnerable at renewal time than they were before July 2025.
⚠Reduction for injury. Scholarship reduction due to injury is technically prohibited by NCAA rules but disputes happen. Get the injury language in writing before signing anything.
⚠GPA requirements. Every scholarship has academic conditions. Know exactly what GPA is required for renewal and what the process is if it falls below that threshold.
