D1 coaches cannot call or text a freshman directly. But they CAN watch you compete at open camps and events. D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO coaches have more flexibility. Do not write those levels off — many athletes get more total aid at D3 than a partial D1 offer.

Most families wait for coaches to find them. The families who get recruited send the first email. Here is exactly what to include and what to never say:

- ✓Do: Personalize every email. One specific reason you like their program. Never send the same email to 50 schools.
- ✓Do: Include your Eligibility Center ID. It signals you already know how this works.
- ✓Do: Keep it under 200 words. Coaches do not read long emails from athletes they don't know yet.
- ✗Never say: "I've always dreamed of playing at [School]" — too emotional, not strategic.
- ✗Never say: "I am one of the best players in my state" — unverified claims hurt credibility.
- ✗Never CC: multiple coaches on the same email. Each gets an individual, personalized message.
Division Reality Check
The single most expensive mistake families make in recruiting is spending four years chasing D1 offers at schools that are not realistic for their athlete's actual level — and missing real, funded opportunities at D2 and D3. Run this honest evaluation every year:
- 01Where do you rank in your sport? Are you in the top 10% of athletes in your state? Top 5%? Top 1%? D1 Power 4 recruits typically come from the top 0.5%.
- 02What does your film actually show? Not what you think it shows. Ask a coach outside your own program to evaluate it honestly.
- 03What is your GPA and test score trajectory? Academic scholarships at D3 frequently exceed partial athletic aid at D1.
- 04Who is actively calling you? Not who you hope will call — who is actually initiating contact right now.
